General Information

The MA programme in Theory and History of Art (METHISTE) offered by the Department of Theory and History of Art was authorized by the Ministerial Decision no. 140883/B7/8.9.2014 (Official Government Gazette 2485/Β′/2014) and was launched during the academic year 2016-2017. The Department awards a Master’s Degree in Theory and History of Art, in the cognitive areas of “History and Theory of Art and Architecture” and “Philosophy of Art and Humanities”.

Among the MA programmes offered by the School of Fine Arts, the MA in Theory and History of Art is the only programme with a purely historical, theoretical and critical orientation. The environment of the School of Fine Arts – a vibrant and dynamic institution with a history of two centuries – is ideal to enable osmosis and exchange of ideas between artistic practice and art history, as well as to a create a broader perspective of “learning through art” or “research through art”. The MA offered by the Department of Theory and History of Art aims, among other things, to prepare scientists and researchers to: respond proficiently to the requirements of teaching in Secondary Education; work in cultural institutions, such as public or private museums and art spaces; meet the demands of cultural journalism, print or electronic; work in the field of book publishing; practice the profession of the art critic. Of course, the MA also paves the way towards the pursuit of a doctoral research degree (PhD) and eventually an academic career. The learning outcomes of the MA programme (see below) reflect all the above aims.

The teaching needs of the MA programme are met by the research and teaching staff of the Department of Theory and History of Art, as well as by eminent faculty members and researchers from other university institutions in Greece and abroad, in the context of the Department’s scientific collaborations. The development of participation and/or exchange initiatives with local and international cultural and artistic institutions is also sought after within the framework of the MA programme.

The very high number of candidates in each study cycle of the MA programme demonstrates the need and aspiration for quality education as regards art history. The MA programme in Theory and History of Art, almost unique in the field at a national level, aims to respond to this need by using all available educational tools (see also the quality assurance policy of the Programme stated below).
