WINTER SEMESTER

ΕΘ-Α2      History of Ancient Art

Instructor:  Dimitrios Damaskos (mandated by the Department of Art Theory and History)

Course description

The aim of the course is to provide an overview of ancient Greek art from the 10th century BC to the end of the 1st century BC, during the period of the formation and development of ancient Greek civilization in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This period saw the creation of high-quality artworks, centred around the human figure, reflecting the diverse activities of individuals in both the public and private spheres of the society in which they lived. Ancient Greek art successively expressed ideals and values that corresponded to the prevailing political systems of the time (aristocracy, tyranny, democracy, monarchy), as well as the relationship between humans and their worshipped deities, which were also human-centred. The course explores the primary categories of ancient Greek art (architecture, sculpture, painting, vase painting, and craft work) by period. The overview concludes with an examination of the interaction between ancient Greek and Roman culture, leading to the creation of the so-called Greco-Roman civilization.
