Postdoctoral Research Regulation
(Decision of the Assembly, session of 16/04/2018 – Government Gazette 2349/B’/20.06.2018)
- The Department of Art Theory and History may collaborate with scholars conducting postdoctoral research in fields that fall within the Department’s research interests. The undertaking of postdoctoral research (a) aims to produce original and high-quality scholarly work, (b) constitutes a source of academic prestige and international distinction for the Department, and (c) contributes to both the quantitative and qualitative advancement of research in the field of the humanities.
- Collaboration includes:
• the supervision or advisory support of the postdoctoral research by a faculty member of the Department;
• the provision of access to academic resources and equipment (library, studios, etc.);
• the assignment by the Department of a specific research project, and
• the potential assignment of teaching duties. - The duration of the postdoctoral research may not be less than one (1) year and may not exceed two (2) years from the date on which the application for conducting the research is approved by the Department Assembly.
- Candidates submit the relevant application to the Department Secretariat. The application must specify the name of the faculty member under whose supervision the applicant intends to conduct their postdoctoral research, as well as the research topic, with emphasis on its significance, utility, and originality in relation to the Department’s field of study, including specific reference to the methods of disseminating the anticipated research outcomes. The application shall be accompanied by the following supporting documents:
• Postdoctoral research proposal
• Detailed curriculum vitae
• Copy of doctoral diploma
• Copy of postgraduate specialisation diploma (if applicable)
• Copy of undergraduate diploma.
Any degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution must bear legal authentication and be accompanied by an official translation and a relevant certificate of equivalence issued by the Hellenic National Academic Recognition and Information Centre (DOATAP). The application is reviewed by the Department Assembly, which also assesses the relevance of the proposed research topic to the Department’s academic field and to the overall scholarly work of the prospective Supervisor. The Assembly is furthermore responsible for determining the language in which the research findings shall be authored. The Secretariat is tasked with notifying the candidate of the decision. - Postdoctoral researchers are required to prepare a progress report on their research in collaboration with their Supervisor, which shall be submitted to the Department Assembly for information at the end of the first year, provided that the duration of the research has been set at two years. Upon the expiration of the designated period for the completion of the research, postdoctoral researchers shall prepare a final report in collaboration with their Supervisor and submit it to the Assembly, which certifies the completion of the postdoctoral research.
- Postdoctoral researchers are required to state the academic affiliation of their research in every publication arising from their postdoctoral research.
- Postdoctoral researchers are not allowed to be remunerated from resources originating from state subsidies. Specifically, they may be compensated through resources derived from nationally and internationally funded research programmes, subject to the approval of the Department Assembly. They may also receive scholarships from national or international organisations and institutions. In cases where the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) has available resources not originating from state subsidies, postdoctoral researchers may enter into a contract with ASFA. The duration of such a contract may not exceed two years and cannot be extended or renewed. This is contingent upon the availability of such resources to cover the relevant remuneration, following a decision by ASFA’ s competent bodies.
- Upon completion of the research, a certificate of postdoctoral research is issued, indicating the higher education institution, the School, the Department, the researcher’s first name, last name, father’s name, place of origin, the Supervisor, the academic field of the research, and the period during which the research was conducted. This certificate does not constitute an academic degree.
- Research findings are presented to the Department Assembly and in a relevant seminar, published in reputable scientific journals where feasible, and posted on the Department’s website.
- The dismissal of postdoctoral researchers may be decided by the Department Assembly for the following reasons:
• Failure to fulfill their obligations as stipulated by the present Regulation.
• Actions that cause harm to or damage the reputation of the Department or the Athens School of Fine Arts.
• Submission of a written request for withdrawal by the researcher. - This Regulation shall take effect from the time of its lawful approval and shall also apply to postdoctoral researchers who have already been accepted prior to its approval, depending on the stage at which they currently stand.
