The Master’s Program in Visual Arts (MET) at the Athens School of Fine Arts offers an environment for artistic research and interdisciplinary dialogue to artists who are in the early stages of their careers.

Throughout the Master’s program, each student’s personal visual language is tested, reevaluated, and expanded. The workshops, theoretical courses, and seminars bring the visual arts into dialogue with contemporary visual culture, diverse methods of visual research, field research, the theory of space and architecture, media studies, sound, and performance, contemporary identities, the post-digital condition, and the public sphere.

The practices developed in the MET program seek to frame personal research questions using methods and tools for constructing a contemporary visual self. The program supports both the critical renegotiation of 20th-century aesthetic paradigms and creative navigation of the expanded visual landscape of the 21st century, new materialities, new forms of participatory performance, internet politics, new media, and strategies for appropriating the city.

The MET is aimed at graduates of fine arts schools from Greece and abroad, as well as graduates of other departments with creative experience who wish to engage with contemporary visual art practice. Theoretical training on cutting-edge topics informs the graduates’ creative and research methodologies and provides the formal and substantive prerequisites for advancing to subsequent levels of study, such as pursuing a doctoral dissertation.

Every member of the Master’s program’s student community has their own workspace and access to the ASFA’s facilities and laboratories. The library, art studios, and exhibition space support the research, creation, and promotion of artistic work.

MET is developing a network of collaborations with art and cultural institutions, independent spaces, social partners, and university departments. Guest artists, curators, and theorists present their work at the School and visit individual studios, while visits to art spaces, museums, exhibitions, and festivals are also organized.

In this way, the program offers an immersive experience in the visual arts that contributes significantly to the professional mobility of its students and shapes the contemporary visual arts landscape.
