Katerina Athanasiou was born in Athens in 1963. She studied Sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1991–1996), graduating from the Sculpture Department, Studio B, under Professor Giorgos Lappas (1996). She went on to complete the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Programme “Digital Forms of Art” (ASFA – National Technical University of Athens, 2001).

She has been a member of the Specialised Teaching Staff in the Department of Fine Arts at ASFA since 2010. Since 1999, she has taught as a contract lecturer (under Law 407/80) and as a specialist scientist. She has also participated in five postgraduate programmes at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, in the Department of Communication and Media, focusing on Cultural and Film Studies, as well as in the School of Architecture’s Interdepartmental Programme “Architecture – Spatial Design” (2013–2019).

She has held seven solo exhibitions, including:

  • Solo exhibition at Agathi Gallery, Athens (2006)

  • (test) in between, solo exhibition, Beton7 Gallery, Athens (2016)

  • Contrived – Forgery, solo exhibition with invited visual artists, at the Melina Cultural Centre, City of Athens

  • Echo, solo visual presentation, in situ installation (5 sculptures) at the port of Volos, on the site where the ship “Argo” used to dock, part of the 2nd Volos Festival of Performing Arts

  • Undermining Certainties, a performative solo project along a selected route in the village of Vizitsa, Pelion, featuring 8 in situ sculptural installations

  • Becoming Twice, solo exhibition at the Giorgio de Chirico Art Centre, Municipality of Volos (2017)

  • The Dazzle of Nostalgia, solo exhibition including sculptures, sculptural installation, lecture performance, drawings, archival material, sound and light, at the Bagkeion Hotel, Omonia Square, Athens (2019)

  • She has also held three solo presentations of sculptural works in the ASFA Theatre foyer (2006, 2010, 2023).

She was the producer for seven years of the City Travellers radio show on Beton7 ArtRadio.
She is the founder of the artist collectives: City Travellers, Beyond Cities, and Topiografoi (Contemporary Topographers of Athens).

She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, published articles in journals, and contributed texts, lectures, and interviews. She has presented papers at academic conferences and authored texts related to The Art of the Anthropocene, a subject she has been teaching since 2019.

Since 2007, she has carried out many student workshops and projects. In 2022, she completed two European Erasmus BIP programmes.
