Photography Studio

The Photography Studio of the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) has been operational since 1998, founded and initially directed by photographer Manolis Bambousis, who led the studio until 2013. Currently, it operates under the supervision of photographer Panos Kokkinias.

The primary objective of the studio is to familiarise students with the use of photography as a medium for the creation of artistic works. The course emphasises the autonomous use of the medium, i.e. the utilisation of its unique characteristics and properties as they have evolved until today. Additionally, the knowledge imparted supports the use of photography as a technical skill applicable to various other visual art practices.

Consistent attendance, active participation in the course, production of work, and completion of technical exercises are all required. These elements are collectively taken into account in the students’ final evaluation.

In addition to the lecture room, the studio includes a photographic studio, a computer lab, and a darkroom. When necessary, photographic equipment may be loaned to students for limited periods.

The course content is divided into the following sections:

  • Production of artistic work, with themes always being chosen by the students
  • Techniques of photo capture (cameras, lenses, exposure, focus, etc.)
  • Digital image processing (Photoshop)
  • Photo studio techniques (artificial lighting, artwork reproduction, etc.)
  • Darkroom (optional)

The hourly distribution of these sections is detailed in the Studio programme.

If this studio course is selected for more than one academic year, emphasis is placed on the production of artistic work, while the necessary technical knowledge is provided on an individualised basis according to the specific requirements of each project.

In terms of technique, digital photography is preferred due to its greater capabilities and cost-effectiveness compared to analogue (film) photography.

The darkroom remains available but in a limited capacity. It should be noted that the technical skills acquired may potentially be applied to professional photography as they develop; however, during the course of study in the studio, the primary focus remains on artistic production.
