Nikos Arvanitis (b. 1979, Athens, Greece) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, the Athens School of Fine Arts (as an Erasmus scholar), and completed the MFA program Public Art and New Artistic Strategies at the Bauhaus University of Weimar, Germany, supported by scholarships from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the A. S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.
In 2005, he was awarded first prize in the ZeitGenosse Schiller public art competition in Weimar, Germany. He was nominated for the 5th DESTE Prize by the DESTE Foundation, Athens (2007), and received second prize in the Spyropoulos Foundation Award, Athens (2009).
His artistic and research practice explores themes related to the structures and potentials of public space, aesthetic perception in contemporary society, the construction of collective identities, and the dynamics of globalized, spectacular, and institutional mass culture. His work spans a broad range of media including painting, drawing, photography, video, sound, installations and performances, public space interventions, music, and radio productions.
In 2005, he co-founded the artist duo Barking Dogs United with Naomi Tereza Salmon.
His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as the 2nd Les Ateliers de Rennes – Biennale d’Art Contemporain (France), the 2nd Athens Biennale (Greece), Halle 14 (Germany), Locust Projects (Miami, USA), Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art (Cairo, Egypt), DESTE Foundation Centre for Contemporary Art (Athens), the Institute of Contemporary Greek Art (Athens), BWA Wrocław Galeria Awangarda (Poland), Bâtiment d’Art Contemporain Le Commun (Geneva, Switzerland), and the Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art (Belgrade, Serbia).
He has held solo exhibitions at a.antonopoulou.art (Athens), artcore (Bari, Italy), and ACC Galerie (Weimar, Germany).
