Marios Spiliopoulos was born in Polygyros, Chalkidiki, in 1957. He studied Painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA), in the studio of Dimitris Kokkinidis.

In 2005, he was elected Professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he had been teaching since 1991. That same year, he became director of the 3rd Painting Studio. He was also a founding member of the working group that established the Postgraduate Programme in Fine Arts (M.E.T.), where he has been teaching since its inception in 2003, and in 2014 he took over as its Director.

He has represented Greece in three European Capitals of Culture: Glasgow (1990), Madrid (1992), and Copenhagen (1996), as well as in the 2nd Istanbul Biennale (1990).

In 1994 he was awarded the “Grand Prix d’ Alexandrie” at the 18th Alexandria Biennale.
