Ioannis Kontaratos was born in Athens in 1968. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1987–1992). In 2012, he was awarded a PhD in Art History and Theory from Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. He is Associate Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA).

He has held seven solo exhibitions (Technopolis City of Athens – Gazi, 1998; Athens Art Gallery, 2002; Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center, 2006; About, 2010; Medusa Art Gallery, 2015; Alpha C.K. Art Gallery, 2016; Medusa Art Gallery, 2017), one solo presentation at an art fair (Diplarios, 2017), and has participated in numerous group exhibitions.

He is the author of William Blake’s Theory of Art and the Significance of His Visual Work for Its Understanding (Nissos, Athens, 2013), and has edited and translated Philip Guston. The Painter in Eden: Texts, Lectures, Interviews (ASFA, Athens, 2014). He has also delivered lectures at academic conferences and published essays on Modern Greek art.
