Department Administration

The Department is administered by: a) the Chair and b) the Department Assembly.

The Chair and Vice-Chair of an academic Department are elected for a two-year term by all full professors, associate professors, and assistant professors, whether permanent or on a fixed-term appointment. Members of the aforementioned categories are entitled to participate in the electoral body even if they are absent from their position, regardless of the reason for their absence, provided that such absence does not entail the suspension or prohibition of the exercise of their duties. The vote for the election of the Chair and Vice-Chair is direct and by secret ballot. The electoral process is conducted exclusively via electronic voting on a working day, to allow for a possible run-off vote on the following working day between candidates who either tie for first place or who occupy the first and second positions. The same individual may not be re-elected as Chair for more than four (4) terms, whether consecutive or not, in the same or another Higher Education Institution department.

The Chair of the Department has, among others, the following tasks:

Heads the Department and supervises its smooth and efficient operation.

Convenes the Department Assembly, presides over its proceedings, prepares the agenda, appoints a rapporteur for the items on the agenda – unless presenting them personally – and ensures the implementation of the Assembly’s decisions.

Forwards opinions, proposals, or recommendations of the Department Assembly to the bodies designated by law.

Prepares the Department’s annual activity report, submits it for approval to the Department Assembly, and forwards it to the School’s Dean, the Senate, and the Administrative Board.

Represents the Department in the Senate and the Dean’s Office, and is obliged to inform the Assembly of the discussions and decisions of both bodies.

In the event of temporary absence or inability to perform duties, the Chair of the Department is substituted by the Vice-Chair, who is elected in the same manner.

The Chair of the Department of Theory and History of Art is currently Ms. Sofia Ntenisi, Professor.

The Department Assembly is composed of: a) the faculty members of the Department; b) the Chair and the Vice-Chair of the Department; c) one representative from each category of personnel, namely, the Special Teaching Staff, the Laboratory Teaching Staff, and the Special Technical Laboratory Staff, provided that a member of the respective category serves in the Department; and d) student representatives of the Department, constituting 15% of the total number of members referred to in points a) and b), with a minimum of one (1) student representative per level of study, provided that the Department offers study programs at all three levels (undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral). Student representatives are entitled to vote only on matters concerning the organisation of study programmes and student-related issues in general.

The representatives of the Special Teaching Staff, the Laboratory Teaching Staff, and the Special Technical Laboratory Staff are elected, along with their alternates, through direct, secret, and universal ballot among the members of the respective staff category. Their term of office is one year and pertains to the academic year following that in which the election is conducted. The election of representatives and their alternates is carried out using a single ballot listing all candidates for each staff category. The competent administrative service of the Higher Education Institution prepares the electoral rolls annually, which include all serving members of the relevant staff category at the Institution. The call for elections to select representatives and their alternates for each staff category is issued by the Chair of the Department no later than four (4) months prior to 31 August of each year, and the election process must be completed by 31 August of the same year at the latest.

The student representatives in the Department Assembly are elected by all students enrolled in the Department’s first, second, and third cycle study programmes. The voting process for student representatives in the Department Assembly is direct and conducted by secret ballot. The electoral process is carried out exclusively through electronic means, using the designated information system known as “Digital Ballot ZEUS.” The election of representatives is conducted using a single ballot that includes all student candidates for each cycle of study.

The electoral body for the selection of student representatives to the Department Assembly consists of: a) all undergraduate students of the Department’s first-cycle study programmes who have not exceeded the maximum duration of studies, as defined in Article 76 (1) of Law 4957/2022; b) all students enrolled in the Department’s Postgraduate Program (Master’s level) who have not exceeded the minimum duration of the programme, as specified in the programme’s founding decision; and c) all doctoral candidates of the Department who have not completed three (3) years from the date of their enrollment. The call for elections to appoint student representatives is issued by the Chair of the Department no later than 30 September of each year. If this deadline is not met, the responsibility for issuing the call for elections is transferred to the Rector of the Higher Education Institution.

All students enrolled in the Department’s first, second, and third cycle study programmes are eligible to submit their candidacy for the position of student representative in the Department Assembly, provided that, during the term of office for which the position is announced, they will not have exceeded the minimum duration of their respective study programme, as defined in its founding decision. Specifically, doctoral candidates of the Department are eligible to submit their candidacy on the condition that, during the term of office for which the position is announced, the minimum period of three (3) years from their enrollment will not have been completed. Applications must be submitted by the interested students to the Department Secretariat within the deadline specified in the election announcement.

The Assembly has the following responsibilities, as well as any other powers provided by the provisions of Law 4957/2022:
