Independent Department of ASFA´s Art Gallery, Exhibitions, Photographic Archive & Collections Documentation

The Department is responsible for the inventory, conservation, safeguarding, and restoration of the School’s collections; the maintenance of the institution’s photographic archive; the organisation of exhibitions drawn from the School’s collections and exhibitions featuring the work of students, faculty members, and invited artists; asd well as the organisation of artistic exchanges with museums or related institutions. It also oversees the preparation and publication of research studies, papers, and exhibition catalogues.

The Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) holds and manages an extensive art collection of significant cultural value. The School’s gallery began to take shape alongside its founding in 1837, with its core focus being the artistic production of those involved in the educational processes of the institution.

This collection comprises over 9,000 visual artworks across various media -including painting, sculpture, printmaking, iconography, photography, and drawing- spanning from the 19th century to the present day.

The works in the Gallery’s collection are representative of the artistic activity of faculty members and students from ASFA’s Visual Arts Department who either excelled or were awarded distinctions in national competitions, or who submitted their work as part of their final degree projects. The collection also includes works donated to the School by renowned artists, as well as a large number of copies, reliefs, and paintings of Greek folk art, created by students under faculty supervision during educational fieldwork. In this sense, the Gallery serves as a living testament to the history of ASFA itself and, by extension, to a vital part of modern Greek art.

The Gallery’s collections continue to grow through the ongoing contributions of ASFA graduates.

Permission from the Athens School of Fine Arts is required for the publication of any work from the collection, in any form.
