VIDEOART

VIDEOART

The aim of the elective course “Video Art” is to introduce students to the fundamental principles of moving image and sound in contemporary art, and to explore the forms and evolution of video and sound as artistic media. The course investigates the expressive potential, plastic qualities, and technical characteristics of moving image and sound, enabling students to use them as materials and expressive tools in the creation of artistic works —either as stand-alone media or in combination with other materials and mediums— as part of mixed-media artistic proposals.

A combined approach is employed —studio practice— in the development of artistic proposals incorporating moving image (video, animation, mapping projection, etc.) and the composition and processing of sound for visual media.

Videoart, professor: V.Betsou, Assistant professor Visual Arts Dpt ASFA

Introduction to moving image (theory and practice), principles of audiovisual language, experimental video and film, narrative video: structure – editing, cinematographic techniques, editing and compositing of digital video and sound, and the design of multi-screen projections in space. All stages in the creation of video art—including single-channel, multi-channel, video installations, and projection mapping—from concept to realisation are presented and analysed, with a consistent focus on aesthetic and visual composition.

The studio offers an overview of the history of Video Art from its early decades to the present day. It presents and analyzes representative video artworks and installations by selected artists.
It explores expressive issues arising from the use of video and moving image in contemporary art. The course includes themed presentations and analyses of examples from experimental cinema, aiming at a deeper understanding of the medium’s expressive potential and identifying key structural elements of audiovisual language in terms of image, sound, and editing

Sound composition, professor: Τ. Diamantopoulos, LT Staff ASFA

As part of the Video Art Studio, a workshop on Sound Composition and Music Technology is also offered, focusing on sound composition for audiovisual works (screenings or installations) and/or the creation of autonomous soundscapes.

Special emphasis is placed on:

  • The planning and implementation of artistic exercises within the studio course, addressing essential expressive and technical issues raised by the medium.
  • The development and realisation of personal artistic projects (videos, video installations, sound compositions) with support and feedback on structure, aesthetics, and technical concerns throughout the entire production process.

    • 2022 Collaboration of the Videoart Studio with the Peloponnisos International Documentary Festival: Under the coordination of Assistant Professor of Video Art, Ms. V. Betsou, ten undergraduate students—participants in the Video Art Workshop and coming from various core studios—along with two postgraduate students from the ASFA Master’s Programme “Digital Forms of Art” took part in the project following an open call. The theme of Africa, which was the central focus of the 2022 festival, also served as the conceptual framework for the workshop, led by guest director Robert Rombout, invited by the festival. The 12 participating students engaged with artists of African descent living and working in Athens and, in pairs, created short films of 3–6 minutes each, enjoying considerable freedom in terms of expression and final form.

The educational workshop took place from April 7 to 17, 2022, and was structured in two parts:

      Part 1 – Athens (April 7–11):
This included an organizational meeting to plan the workshop between guest director Robert Rombout, Video Art Workshop coordinator V. Betsou, and the festival’s artistic directors Ms. Gina Petropoulou and Kleoni Flessa (via teleconference).
Production planning involved: communication with African artists, task distribution, and shooting schedule planning. Filming took place in teams, with students working directly with the African artists, under the support and coordination of Professor V. Betsou.

      • On April 8, a masterclass was held at ASFA by guest director R. Rombout.

      • On April 9, a cinematography workshop was conducted by Odysseas Pavlopoulos of the Greek Society of Cinematographers, also at ASFA.
This was followed by additional shooting sessions, rough cuts, and one-on-one consultation and instruction by R. Rombout in collaboration with Professor Betsou.

      Part 2 – Kalamata (April 14–17):
This phase included final editing, sound mixing, and color grading of the six films, in collaboration with the guest director and other festival partners. The final collective film was publicly screened at the festival’s closing ceremony on April 17 at the Creative Documentary Center in Kalamata, in the presence of all participants
