In higher education research, sense of belonging is referred to as students’ and staff’s subjective sense of ‘fitting in’, ‘identification with the university community’, in feelings of acceptance, respect and support. A strong sense of belonging is a cornerstone of meaningful learning and professional development. In higher arts education, where identity, self-expression and cultural perspectives are deeply interwoven with learning, belonging becomes even more vital. Both staff and students thrive when they feel seen, heard and valued in their communities. Internationalisation adds a powerful but complex dimension to this. Diverse classrooms and international collaborations bring rich opportunities for exchange, but they also raise questions: How do we ensure every participant feels included? How can institutions create environments where differences are celebrated and not seen as barrier?

Our aim for the international BIP week is to bring together educators, policy makers and support staff from various institutions, departments, and backgrounds to exchange experiences, co-create strategies, and develop practical tools to foster belonging in art higher education. In the programme (see attachment) we will focus on 3 focus areas:

  • Inclusive practices – How can we design and deliver teaching that values diverse backgrounds and perspectives? How can we build a safe and creative learning space for all students and staff and build teams and communities?
  • Well-being and support structures – How do teaching methods and an organizational culture foster or hinder belonging? How can we ensure learning strategies are inclusive and participatory?
  • Quality assurance and belonging – How can we embed belonging into evaluation frameworks? How can Q&A processes support inclusion?

We look forward to welcoming you to The Hague and work together on this relevant and inspiring topic. Please express your interest in participation via this form before October 26th. This event qualifies for the Erasmus+ programme (staff training).
