Housing Allowance


Undergraduate students of Greek citizenship or citizenship of other countries of the European Union have the right to submit an application for housing allowance ( https://europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/countries_el). Beneficiaries are granted an annual housing allowance equal to one thousand five hundred (1.500) euros if they live in a city other than their main residence.  In case a beneficiary shares their residence with another student, the allowance equals to two thousand (2.000) euros, according to par. 1 article 181 «Increase of the annual student housing allowance – Amendment of paragraph 1 article 10 law 3220/2004» of law 4972/2022 (Government Gazette 181/Α/23.09.2022) 

Beneficiary of the allowance is the person deemed to be responsible of the student, in accordance with the provisions of article 11 of law 4172/2013 (Α΄ 167). In the case of divorced or estranged spouses, the beneficiary of the allowance is the parent responsible for the student.

In case of an exception, students themselves will be the beneficiaries if:

 a) both their parents have deceased and they became orphans or

 β) their parents are residents of a foreign country or

c) they are twenty-five (25) years old or older, or

d) they are liable to submit a tax return and is not considered a dependent member, according to article 11 of law 4172/2013 (Α΄ 167).

Submission of application and supporting documents

The prospective beneficiaries will submit an application for the granting of the housing allowance exclusively in the online application  https://stegastiko.minedu.gov.gr  of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs on a date announced each year by the Ministry.

A condition for the submission of the application is that the student to whom the allowance is granted must be a Greek citizen or a citizen of another European Union country, hold a valid academic ID and hold a tax registration number in Greece. Citizenship is linked only to the students themselves and not to their parents or guardians.

Determining the procedure and the supporting documents for granting a housing allowance

Who is not entitled to a housing allowance:

 a) students studying for a second degree, regardless of the way they entered a HEI,

b) students who have exceeded the duration of study in terms of the semesters required to receive their degree, according to the indicative curriculum,

c) those who live in a student residence or are provided accommodation by their faculty.
