The lecture offers an overview of the history of Modern Greek art from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. It addresses various definitions of the subject matter, its geographical and chronological boundaries, as well as the main related historiography categories. Through an examination of the most significant artists of the period, the lecture explores the diverse manifestations of Modern Greek art within their historical-political and social contexts, alongside their interactions with European artistic movements. The course also focuses on the institutional formation of the artistic field in Greece and the study of the theoretical and critical discourse on art produced during this period. Throughout the investigation, approaches drawn from intercultural history are employed with the aim of highlighting the cultural transfers and appropriations that have contributed to shaping the country’s artistic production and the broader art environment.
