Department of Visual Arts

The art Studio, which, over the years, has been connected in an historical way with the country’s educational programme and the very identity of the ASFA, is the basic training unit and virtually the “core” of the Department of Visual Arts. Each Studio, by means of its own syllabus, initially familiarises students with the visual art “language” and its means, shapes their visual and theoretic culture, and ultimately expands their critical thinking in the fields of creation and artistic expression. The art Studio does not just convey to students practical knowledge on various techniques but also a certain idea of Art, a certain view which can be totally different, though equally valuable, from the one proposed by another Studio. The operation of several Studios reflects the pluralism of modern artistic expression, as well as the freedom of choice students enjoy at the ASFA on art education provided by the Department. As a matter of fact, the Department’s curriculum gives its students the opportunity to not only initially opt for but also change the Studio they attend, according to their own interests and personal needs, in pursuit of their personal artistic voice.
The Department of Visual Arts consists of three (3) Divisions:
- Sculpture Division
- Painting Division
- Printmaking Division
The Painting Division operates thirteen (13) Studios, the Sculpture Division operates two (2) Studios, and the Printmaking Division operates one (1) Studio. The Department’s Curriculum also includes elective studio and lecture courses. Since its establishment, and to the present day, many of the Department’s Studios make use of life models in the study of the human body. In the context of a broader syllabus, the study of the human form remains to this day an exercise of particular significance. Studies at the Department of Visual Arts last for five years (10 semesters). During the last two (2) semesters, students work on their diploma dissertation, under the guidance and supervision of the Director of the Studio they attend and its other Teaching and Research Staff members.
Upon completion of their studies, students are awarded by the Department of Fine Arts a common “Diploma in Fine Arts” (Bachelor of Fine Arts), mentioning their Division option:
- Painting
- Sculpture
- Printmaking
Graduates who have attended and succeeded in the relevant special lecture courses are entitled to teach Art in all levels of Education. The Department of Visual Arts of the Athens School of Fine Arts is subject to the provisions of article 46 of Law 4485/2017, on the basis of which its graduates are awarded a joint and indivisible degree of postgraduate level (integrated master), in particular, of level 7 of the National and European Qualifications Framework (Official Government Gazette 4268/2018, issue Β΄).
