Admission to the department

Due to the specific nature of the discipline taught in the Department of Visual Arts -namely, the field of art- its admission examinations are exempt from the general Pan-Hellenic National Examinations framework. Instead, the Department conducts special entrance examinations in accordance with the decision Φ.151/2995/Β6/13.1.2010 of the Minister of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs (Government Gazette 55/2010, vol. B΄).

The examinations are administered by the Admission Examinations Committee, which consists of all T&R (Teaching and Research) Staff members of the Department holding the academic rank of (Full) Professor and Associate Professor, as well as one (1) Lecturer, appointed periodically (or annually) by the University Senate.

Candidates seeking admission to the Department’s first year of study are required to create visual artworks based on various compositions – life models, still life objects, or a combination of both. The Admission Examinations Committee is responsible for selecting and arranging the models in the examination halls. For each test, candidates may choose one or more of the available models, unless the Committee designates a specific test as mandatory.

The examinations are held over a period of five days in the month of September.

 DETAILED PROGRAMME OF ADMISSION EXAMINATIONS

he Admission Examinations Committee, in accordance with the provisions of Ministerial Decision Φ.151/2925/Β6/2010 (Government Gazette 55/25.1.2010, vol. B΄), as amended and currently in force, has drawn up the detailed program of the Admission Examinations for the academic year 2023–2024 as follows:

Candidates will create visual artworks based on various models, either animate or inanimate, or a combination of both. There will be at least two (2) models: one model for drawing and one compositional model for the colour test.

a)        DRAWING

Candidates must execute black-and-white drawings on white drawing paper (Elle Erre, 220 g/m², 50 x 70 cm) or on white matte Bristol paper (300 or 280 g/m², 50 x 70 cm), both provided by the Athens School of Fine Arts.

The drawing board on which the paper is placed (dimensions 50 x 70 cm) is also provided by the School.

All other materials required for the drawing test must be brought by the candidates themselves.

β)        COLOUR

Candidates may use any materials they wish, except oil paints and other materials that do not dry within a short period of time. The works must be executed on white matte Bristol paper (300 or 280 g/m², 50 x 70 cm), provided by the Athens School of Fine Arts, for whichever test the candidate chooses.

The works to be executed by the candidates are as follows:

  • (a) One (1) black-and-white drawing from life (from a plaster cast) – mandatory test.
  • (b) One colour composition from life – colour/composition test.
  • (c) One test based on the theme of the human figure, using either an animate or inanimate model. This theme is announced on any one of the examination days and lasts for three (3) hours.
  • (d) One test involving the free re-composition of the given subjects (drawing or colour).

From the total number of works executed, each candidate must submit three (3) to four (4) completed works at the end of the examinations. Among these, test (a) – the black-and-white drawing from a plaster cast – is compulsory. The remaining two to three (2–3) works may be selected from tests (b), (c), and/or (d) listed above.

The Admission Examinations Committee is responsible for selecting and arranging the models in the designated examination areas.
